Sleep Apnea affects millions of people in the United States today and an estimated Billion people around the world . It can be a life-threatening disorder that causes one to repeatedly stop breathing in their sleep. You could have sleep apnea if you snore loudly or feel tired/groggy after a full night of sleep.
Insomnia is the most common sleep complaint. It occurs when you have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep even though you had the opportunity to get a full night of sleep. There are many causes, varying symptoms and severity of insomnia from person to person.
Restless Legs is a condition that causes an uncontrollable urge to move your legs, usually because of an uncomfortable sensation. It typically happens in the evening or nighttime hours when you're sitting or lying down. Moving eases the unpleasant feeling temporarily.
Snoring is the sound a person makes when their breathing is hindered while asleep. Snoring can disturb your sleep ( without you even realizing and result in tiredness/drowsiness ) or bed partner' s sleep.
Severe cases of snoring can lead to frequent awakenings and can also be a sign of Sleep Apnea.
Narcolepsy is a rare but chronic neurological disorder that disrupts the brain's ability to control sleep-wake cycles. It is believed to be caused by genetic predisposition and damage to certain brain cells that causes abnormality of neurotransmitters involved in stabilizing sleep-wake cycles. This causes excessive sleepiness often resulting in uncontrollable urges to sleep. Narcolepsy requires certain very specific criteria. Amongst which are intrusions of sleep into wakefulness causing a hall mark symptoms of sudden muscle weakness associated with emotions such as laughter, fear or anger. There are several other conditions that cause excessive sleepiness and diagnosis can be very challenging.
This is a category of unusual behaviors during sleep such as Night terrors, sleep walking or eating.
Sleep Paralysis is a feeling of being unable to move upon awakening. It can be one of the symptoms of Narcolepsy or a feature of sleep deprivation. It may also be the result of stress.
REM Behavior Disorder that causes one to act out your dreams while alseep can also be a feature of Narcolepsy or other conditions like Parkinsons disease.
